ARTIST NOTE
The abstract art movement was a departure from rendering reality and the accurate depiction of imagery. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. This art movement began in the 1940s in New York City. It first appeared with artists like Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky at the end of the nineteenth century and developed throughout the twentieth century. Now while studying this movement I have never felt any need to be part of it. But when painting water and the creatures that live within it, I feel I have slipped into a form of abstract art. While adhering to the principles of classical representation, my end product seems otherwise. Maybe there is an element of abstraction in all reality. My experience makes me believe abstraction is an essential part of reality. There is nothing plain about reality. If you slow down and observe carefully, there is endless magic.
